Dr. John Heiss' Photograph

John D. Heiss, M.D., Principal Investigator

Dr. John Heiss received both his B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and M.D. from the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the head of the Clinical Unit of the Surgical Neurology Branch at the, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Heiss is also Vice-Chair of the NINDS Institutional Review Board (IRB) and a member of the Surgical Administrative Committee. Dr. Heiss has considerable experience in treating tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system, syringomyelia, and epilepsy.

Andrew J. Mannes, M.D., Lead Associate Investigator

Dr. Andrew Mannes received his B.S. in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, his M.E. in engineering from Dartmouth College in 1983, and his M.D. from George Washington University in 1990. He currently serves as an Anesthesiologist at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Mannes is interested in the treatment of severe pain that is most often seen during the end-of-life stages of disease. Dr. Mannes has many other interests that include the use of gene therapy to target pain pathways and the use of proteomic and genomic techniques to improve the diagnoses of disease states.

Ann M. Berger, M.S.N, M.D., Associate Investigator

Dr. Ann Berger received her B.S. in nursing from New York University, her M.S.N. in oncology nursing from University of Pennsylvania, and her M.D. from Medical College of Ohio. She currently serves as the Chief of the Pain and Palliative Care Service at the NIH. Dr. Berger has published several books for professionals on the management of pain.

Fredric K. Cantor, M.D., Associate Investigator

Dr. Fredric Cantor received both his B.A. and M.D. from Yale University. He is a neurologist in the Surgical Neurology Branch at the NINDS, NIH. Dr. Cantor also serves as a special volunteer for research for the Neuroimmunology Branch of NINDS. Dr. Cantor has considerable experience in diagnosing and treating people with chronic pain. He has been an investigator in several trials to evaluate medications for the treatment of chronic pain.

René Smith, R.N., B.S.N, Associate Investigator

René Smith received her BSN from the University of Michigan in 1989. As a research nurse specialist, Ms. Smith has spent her career specializing in neuroscience research. Ms. Smith has worked as a research nurse specialist at the NINDS Surgical Neurology Branch at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland since 2001.

Amina Oughourli Photograph

Amina Oughourli, R.N., B.S.N., CCRC, Study Coordinator

Amina Oughourli received her BSN from Rutgers University in 1995. She has been doing clinical research for most of her nursing career and has experience coordinating clinical trials in multiple disease specialties. Ms. Oughourli is credentialed as a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator and has previously worked at Columbia University and Hackensack University Medical Centers. She joined the NINDS Surgical Neurology Branch in Bethesda, MD in April of 2012.
